To explain the phrase Honor Regiment, we should start at the beginning.​The act of becoming a United States Marine is a challenge. It requires individual determination and excellence while contributing to an effective team. No one has it easy or escapes notice.​In the process of earning the title of Marine, new recruits are organized into units called platoons, and those platoons compete against each other. The competitions are across many categories over a span of months. The competitions are designed to find the smartest, fastest, most skilled team of people. The platoon that wins overall is the Honor Platoon.​​
Every competitor achieves something most people do not by becoming a Marine; every team goes on to serve with pride and distinction; but only one team becomes the Honor Platoon. In the Fleet Marine Force, a regiment is a large unit dedicated to a specific mission and purpose. Each regiment consists of multiple battalions; each battalion contains several companies; and every company has multiple platoons. The spirit of healthy competition pervades all levels of the Marine Corps. Each platoon, company, and battalion challenges itself and its peers to be the best. And regiments do not stand alone. These large units consisting of thousands of highly trained and inspired Marines stand alongside other regiments to form a division. Within the division, one regiment is the most capable, the most reliable, and the most accomplished. One team – composed of level upon level of smaller and more focused teams – is the best.
